What will my baby sleep on?
Often a lot of thought goes into the cot, but little is given to the mattress the baby will sleep on. I believe the mattress is more important than the cot.
The mattress your baby sleeps on should be the same as an adult’s mattress, simply smaller. The mattress should be made from high quality materials, have very good springs and provide good support.
Just because a cot comes with a mattress, does not mean that mattress is suitable for your baby. Many large baby stores make their own mattresses and put them into the cots, making it seem like that’s the mattress that you have to use. This is not the case at all and I recommend you not falling into that trap. Do research into the quality of the mattress. I’ve found one of the best forms of research is to test it yourself. Test to see if the mattress is firm and comfortable, not lumpy or too soft. If you can feel the springs, then so will your baby, and they will not sleep well avoid any foam mattresses and any with latex on them they both make babies too hot. .
If you are not sure where to spend your money when it comes to cots and mattresses, I would recommend buying a cheaper cot for example an IKEA one and a better quality mattress. The colour or style of your cot won’t matter to your baby, but the quality of the mattress will.
Mattress thickness
Hi Tizzie: I would like to purchase your mattress but my cot lists that the mattress needed for it should be 110mm in thickness. Would you think I can still use yours?
Thank you for your question. The Save Our Sleep mattress will not be unsafe to use with the cots you have looked at but you will need to keep in mind your little one might be able to climb out sooner with the Save Our Sleep mattress, having said that once a toddler learns how to climb out 10mm will not keep him or her in the cot longer. I believe the mattress needs to be this little bit thicker to make it comfortable for toddlers your baby will one day be a toddler and heavier.

I worry about these cheaper mattresses that are sold as an add on to a cot because of where and how they are made.
I used the one that I was sold when I purchased our first cot and it was thin, cheap, made with crap material. We had sweating issues and lots of other problems.

I don’t know if it’s a “coincidence”, but my first didn’t have a Save Our Sleep mattress until her big bed and she’s an “ok” sleeper, not great. Writing reviews on products is definitely not my kind of thing, and besides, I have a 6 month old so time is not exactly my friend. However, I just HAD to write a review for this mattress. I had resigned myself to the thought that I just had a sweaty baby. My husband used to suffer from the same problem, especially through night, so I figured it was genetic. Despite Minnie sleeping through from 10 weeks whilst following the SOS routines, each night through summer her head and forehead would always be damp, if not wet, leaving significant patches on the bedding, mattress and even the wood of the cot. I had not connected the dots, and when I purchased the SOS mattress and protector it was actually because her old one was beginning to sag and was very soft in places… It just wasn’t supporting her enough the more she grew. Well, the first night we used the SOS mattress it was hot here in WA and not a bead of sweat appeared on Minnie. Nor for the next few nights either or for any of her day sleeps during which we experienced some of our most humid days on record. I’m so annoyed at myself that I didn’t consider the mattress to be a factor and have let my baby suffer (whilst still sleeping, admittedly), for all this time. It is also lovely and firm for her ever increasing size, and so thick and deep. Thank you, thank you, thank you.. I’ve been an SOS convert ever since I read the book whilst pregnant.
