Why a Pram Nap Might Be Just What Your Baby (and You!) Need This Winter

As the cooler months roll in, it’s easy to find ourselves tucked indoors — but don’t underestimate the benefits of sleep in the fresh-air for your baby. Getting outside each day for a pram sleep or nap doesn’t just support your little one’s sleep, it’s also a valuable mental health break for you — and a perfect way to wear out a busy toddler at the park!

The Power of a Fresh Air Sleep

Research over the years has linked better overnight sleep in infants to having at least one sleep or nap during the day outdoors in the fresh air, along with plenty of outdoor play. It’s no surprise really — fresh air, natural light, and the gentle motion of a walk in the pram will do wonders for a baby’s ability to wind down and rest.

In many Nordic countries, such as Denmark and Finland, it’s common practice to let babies nap outside even during the colder months. Families believe the combination of fresh air and lower temperatures helps babies sleep more soundly at night — and many parents will tell you the same is true here in Australia.

Why I Recommend the Pram Nap

That’s why you’ll find a pram nap included in most of my early routines. Even just a short walk with your baby in the afternoon may help regulate their sleep cycle and give you both a much-needed change of scenery.

If you have a toddler, it’s a double win — your baby naps in the pram while your toddler gets to burn off some energy at the park. A breath of fresh air, some sunshine, and a little movement will do wonders for everyone’s mood and sleep.

But Isn’t It Too Cold?

In an ideal world, we’d all pop our babies outside for one sleep a day — but safety is always the priority, and it’s not always suitable depending on your space and setup. That’s where the pram nap comes in — a practical, supervised way to enjoy the benefits of outdoor sleeping while keeping your baby safe and close.

To make pram naps more comfortable during the colder months, it’s important to dress your baby appropriately.

For babies having a sleep in the pram during the cooler months, you would dress them and use the same bedding as you do indoors, adding a top warmer layer—for example, the pram cover that came with your pram.

If you’re following my routine, younger babies having a pram nap should be dressed as described above. However, for older babies who are beginning to transition away from this nap, I recommend trying the pram nap suit. This allows your baby to rest if they’re tired and need a few minutes of shut-eye, but if they no longer require the nap, the freedom to move their arms and play with their hands means they’re less likely to fall asleep unnecessarily.

— and that’s where one of my favourite products comes in.

My Pick: The Purebaby Quilted Pram Nap Suit

The Purebaby Quilted Pram Nap Suit is designed especially for little ones heading out in the pram. It’s warm, soft, and beautifully made — with thoughtful details like a built-in hood, ribbed cuffs to keep the arms and legs from riding up, and a two-way zip for easy dressing.

Whether you’re following your routine or simply heading out for some fresh air and movement, this pram suit will help keep your baby snug and settled.

So bundle up, head out, and enjoy a moment of peace knowing that your baby is benefitting from the fresh air — and you’re giving yourself a mental reset too. A simple pram nap could be the refreshing winter ritual you didn’t know you needed.
