When should I move my baby to a big bed?

This is a question I am asked often.

As a guide, I suggest most girls are ready from around 2.5 years of age and boys from around 3 years of age. However, I would always look at your child and their development rather than focusing only on age. I talk more about it in my newsletter here.

Setting Up Your Child’s Big Bed

If you are following my advice in the toddler book and moving your child from a cot to a big bed while they are still in a sleep bag, I recommend using the Pure Cotton Duvet (8 TOG) and continuing to use the sleep bag underneath during the warmer months.

In the cooler months, you may add the Save Our Sleep Luxury Blankets for extra warmth.

If You Are Not Using a Sleep Bag

If you are not using a safe sleep bag under the quilt, I suggest using the Pure Wool Duvet (12 TOG).

A simple tip:

• In summer, you may flatten the duvet to reduce the TOG
• In winter, give it a good shake and fluff it up, the more air it holds, the warmer it will be

For Children with Allergies

If your little one has allergies, I recommend using:

• Bamboo sheets
• One of our mattress protectors

Pillow Recommendation

The pillow I recommend is My First Pillow, as it has been designed to provide the correct low profile support for young children.

FAQ

Do you sell single bed waterproof mattress protectors?
No, I do not sell full waterproof mattress protectors as they can make children sweat and may aggravate eczema.

Instead, I recommend using the Save Our Sleep mattress protector on the bed and placing the Save Our Sleep Waterproof Bedlinen Protector under your child’s bottom (or under their head if they have a vomiting bug).

Why can I not find a king single duvet?
We do not sell king single quilts as it is very difficult to find covers that fit them well.

Instead, I recommend using a double size duvet, as there are many beautiful children’s covers available and they sit much better on the bed than a single.
